Julie Richie, M.F.A
Raised in Connecticut and New Jersey, Julie earned a B.A. in political science from Brown University and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Lesley University. While at Brown, she met her husband, a native Texan, who wooed her to the Lone Star state. After 20 years in journalism and public relations, she began the most fulfilling stage of her career - working with teens and young adults through college admissions process.. She moved to Austin from Dallas in 2017 and has been with College MatchPoint for over a year.
As a mother of two college-aged sons with learning differences, she especially enjoys working with students who have learning disabilities. “High school students are so much fun to work with. They’re just beginning to think about their place in the world, which makes their essays so interesting. I love helping students identify and utilize their strengths, uncover and reflect on their most compelling stories, and then find their unique writing voice. But what is most rewarding is when these students come back after their freshman year of college and tell me how much they love their school. That’s when I feel like I have played a small part in launching them into their future.”
Julie is active in IECA attending conferences and campus tours on a regular basis. She is an avid researcher and loves to find the perfect college for each of her students. When she is not working on her own writing projects or reading, you can find her hiking on one of Austin’s many trails with her Lab puppy, or at home teaching him new tricks.
Here’s what a few of our clients have to say about their experience with our team:
“My daughter, who happens to have special needs, benefitted greatly from the staff/resources in the coordination of steps in the college process. It was great that she could do this with you and eliminated the stress on parent/child relationship issues that could have arisen between us. She is proud of the fact that she was admitted to all colleges she applied to! Thank you!” — Sherry Garza, Austin, TX
“College MatchPoint provided insight, persistence, and savvy advice for our son. They were able to create a college list to match his learning needs and personality. In fact, he got into all of the schools to which he applied. I continually refer College MatchPoint to my Bay Area co-workers.” — Jane Grodem, San Carlos, CA
“I was so worried about picking the right college for my son with a learning difference. Lisa is very knowledgeable and most importantly, very reassuring. She is clearly very experienced and often anticipated my concerns. I always felt so much better after speaking with her. She worked very well with my son and guided him through each step skillfully. We started early so we were not overwhelmed and were not under the gun for application deadlines. I would highly recommend her for any family.” — Saleena Phillips, Atlanta, GA
“My son has ADD and we had no idea which colleges were ADD-friendly. Lisa knew. Also we found the career testing very helpful. I highly recommend College MatchPoint.” — Lisa Powell, Austin,TX
“College MatchPoint was tremendously helpful in assisting me in finding a suitable college placement for my twice exceptional (i.e. gifted and disabled) child. The college we chose was not one that I would have considered if Lisa had not recommended it as a possibility. What I valued most about working with Lisa was a sense that I was not going it alone. The opinions I received were extremely helpful in evaluating which college would be the best fit for my son. — Patricia Obenour, Nashville, TN
